About Tesla VIN Check

Tesla VIN Check is a free tool designed to help Tesla owners and prospective buyers understand the information encoded in a Tesla Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Understanding Tesla VINs

Every Tesla vehicle has a unique 17-character VIN that contains coded information about the vehicle's manufacturer, model, features, production plant, and more. Our decoder breaks down this code to reveal valuable details about any Tesla vehicle.

How Tesla VINs Work

A Tesla VIN follows the standardized 17-character format used by all vehicle manufacturers but contains Tesla-specific codes. Here's what each section means:

World Manufacturer Identifier (Positions 1-3)

The first three characters identify the manufacturer. For Tesla, this is typically "5YJ" for vehicles made in Fremont, California, "7SA" for Model X/Y from Fremont, "LRW" for vehicles from Gigafactory Shanghai, and "XP7" for vehicles from Gigafactory Berlin.

Vehicle Descriptor Section (Positions 4-8)

  • Position 4: Model (S, 3, X, Y, R for Roadster, C for Cybertruck, etc.)
  • Position 5: Body type and drive side (LHD/RHD)
  • Position 6: Restraint system type
  • Position 7: Battery type or charger configuration
  • Position 8: Motor configuration (single, dual, performance)

Vehicle Identifier Section (Positions 9-17)

  • Position 9: Check digit (validation character)
  • Position 10: Model year (A=2010, B=2011, ... R=2024, S=2025)
  • Position 11: Manufacturing plant
  • Positions 12-17: Sequential production number
